The village of Mylopotamos is located in the center of the island, near the western coast, and offers many activities.
The village is famous for its stunning waterfalls that offer beautiful hikes and crystal clear fresh water pools. It also hosts a Venetian castle and a troglodyte church.
The village beach, Limnionas, is a 10 minutes drive away. In a beautiful cove, surrounded by rocky bluffs, you will find a charming traditional cantina that serves mezethes and drinks. From Limnionas you can hike (1/2 hours) to the aphrodites bath or green pool.
In the village square, a short stroll from the house, you can sit under the centennial sycamore trees. There you’ll find one of the island’s best restaurants, serving traditional and reinterpreted Greek specialties. You can also enjoy an espresso, cocktail or snack at a café by the river bank. All are offering internet to their customers.
For your convenience, there is a small shop in the village where you can find necessaries, as well as local fruits, vegetables and eggs. Milopotamos is also home to several boutiques, where you can find jewelry, local art, and summer fashions, including the perfect hat for the beach. Recently an herbalist also opened a shop in the village and can concoct teas and potions for you.
And, when, you will eventually feel like leaving the village, its location is ideal for visiting Kythira and discover its many beaches and other attractions.
Other Things to Note
Kythira is beautiful not only in the summertime, but year-round. Come in the autumn, when the light is spectacular, the beaches are empty, and the sea is still warm. Join in the olive picking, go for long walks in the hills, or just doze on a hammock with the gentle sun on your face. Or come in the spring, when the island is green and lush and blanketed with wildflowers of every color imaginable, when streams and waterfalls are gushing, and people are feeling festive for apokria (Carnival) and Easter celebrations.
The sea is swimmable year-round (though quite brisk from December until May), and the weather is mild -- sometimes rainy, sometimes sunny, never very cold.
Because Kythira is a relatively large island, you'll need to rent a car -- or drive down through the Peloponnesus and take the ferry across the strait from Neapoli to Kythira. Feel free to write me for more information about how to get to and get around the island.
