Villa Magdalena offers a rare blend of traditional Cretan architecture and open-plan modern living. It sits in a walled plot on the edge of Kefalas, one of the most beautiful villages in the Apokoronas district of Western Crete.The heart of the villa is a 200 year-old stone building which remained under the ownership of a local family for generations. The villa underwent a complete reconstruction during the 1990s, with the downstairs opened up into a single living area and the upstairs converted into two bedrooms and a bathroom. A stable block was incorporated to become a wing offering two further bedrooms and a second bathroom, and a large kitchen-diner extension was added to the rear, together with a sun terrace on its roof which benefits from views of the Souda Bay and the White Mountains.To the front of the villa is a walled courtyard with space to park five cars, accessed through double metal gates. To the rear, there are extensive private gardens, including an olive tree believed to be over 300 years old, and an impressive pine tree which also pre-dates the villa. Stone courtyards, paving and raised beds feature throughout, and the gardens are surrounded by a stone wall. A variety of local fruit trees, herbs and shrubs have been planted over the years to create botanical interest.A large kidney-shaped swimming pool is hidden behind olive and fruit trees at the end of the garden, allowing guests to enjoy the Cretan sun in complete tranquillity and privacy.
