‘Firebird Cottage’ was built in 1839 for an early settler James Holden, who, after marrying and having children in this enchanting cottage, went to find his fortune in the Victorian Gold Rush. A story of romancing a new land, ‘Firebird Cottage’ is in keeping with its heritage origins while adding a certain ‘joie de vivre’ with its French provincial warmth. Ideal for those who love the story behind the home, or want to create a new chapter in love, ‘Firebird Cottage’ will make lasting memories.
Our place
Sit overlooking the beautiful parterre garden on the captivating verandah and step back in time to a simpler life of relaxation and charm. Sporting a ‘Local Heritage Place’ plaque on the picket fence, you’ll be transformed into another world once you step inside. With its travertine floors adding the French Provincial flavour and the narrow Baltic pine staircase paying homage to its c19th authenticity, you’ll be mesmerising by the antiques, the class and the cosiness found within.
Open the front door, and you’ll be greeted by the staircase, with the classical lounge to one side, and the elegant dining room to the other. The lounge enjoys a 3-seater couch, silk armchair, a delightful fireplace and library with books to read. The dining room is filled with tapestries on the walls, has a timeless timber dining table with a Fleur de Lis design, a fold down study desk and a piano for sing-songs after dinner.
The superb French Provincial kitchen has timber benchtops, Ilve appliances, a filtered water tap, Espresso pod machine, a vintage Smeg fridge and toaster, and plenty of kitchenware – including pink pots, to cook up a romantic dinner. A church pew sits in the extended kitchen space where you will find French doors out to the traditional French-inspired courtyard – with its ornamental grapevine donning the verandah, fragrant lavender, formal hedging and a plush couch soaked in afternoon sun to lounge around and a stunning flagstone gas fireplace to warm the winter nights.
There is a cellar style sitting room or 2nd bedroom with a day bed and television – an ideal hideaway for a teenager or additional friend; while the main bedroom is on the top floor via the original staircase, where you will find a romantic queen size bed, ornamental fireplace, a lovely ottoman and plenty of storage. The sparkling bathroom is on the ground floor with a shower over the corner spa bath, a pedestal basin, toilet and laundry facilities.
