The beaches of Cascais have names like the "Pescadores", "Marchioness" and the "Queen", reminding us of the time when it was the "Land of Kings and fishermen". Portuguese kings and many exiled kings have lived in Cascais over the years. Praia dos Pescadores, (Fisherman's beach) is where fishermen haul in their catches to be sold at the market and a wonderful place to take a stroll. The Cascais Fortress is a must see as well; nowadays transformed into a commercial area featuring several different boutiques and a five star hotel. Walking around the fortress will also lead you to the ‘Baia de Cascais’ which still features typical fishing boats and a small beached area surrounded by shops, a hotel, our local town hall, all enclosed within cobbled stone floors, 15th, 16th & 17th century sculptures & architecture. There are abundant places for typical Portuguese cuisine as well as international offerings from all over the world. The Cascais Market is the place to go if visitors would like to shop for cheap but fresh fish, fruits, vegetables, cakes, and flowers. It is open from Monday to Saturday although the busiest days are on Wednesdays and Saturdays. There are also a host of restaurants if you have children, we recommend you take them to the ‘Park Marechal Carmona’, located in the centre of Cascais and has a duck pond and peacocks walking around. Cascais offers an array of museums, including the modern ‘Paula Rego Museum’, hLp:// GUINCHO BEACH, is located 5 km from Cascais, lying at the foot of the Sintra hills and facing the Atlantic, should not be missed. The sand dunes blend subtly with the pine trees, the sea - rich in fish - rushes here and there into majestic caverns such as the famous ‘Boca do Inferno’, which is well worth a visit. The vegetation is varied and beautiful and mostly of the Mediterranean type. Guincho has always been ideal for surfing owing to the large breakers, but it is now becoming increasingly known for kite surfing - a sport much developed over the last few years. ESTORIL, a world-famous resort, is a true cosmopolitan centre with wonderful nightlife spots and all you need for a summer holiday centre - beaches, excellent hotels, golf courses, a casino and a motor-racing circuit. The centre of this resort is the Park of the Estoril Casino surrounded by arcades and excellent hotels. In the 1930s Estoril became one of Portugal’s main tourist centres, and the chosen place of exile for a lot of deposed European monarchs (Juan, Count of Barcelona, Carol II of Romania and Umberto of Italy among them). SINTRA, contains an abundance of historic monuments and enthralling tourist attractions. Within the town, there are more than ten national monuments, and these varied buildings range from extravagant palaces and decadent houses through to ancient ruinous castles. Sintra is situated within the beautiful natural scenery of the Parque Natural de Sintra-Cascais. This national park incorporates the steep hills of Sintra and the lush forests that lead down to the dramatic coastline. These hills are the basis for many of the activities of the region, which include hiking trails, challenging cycle routes and some of the best rock climbing found in Portugal. The town centre of Sintra is incredibly charming, with pretty cobbled streets that are lined with traditional house, shops and cafes, all centred around the Gothic styled National Palace. Sintra has so much to offer visitors, and it is no wonder that it is the most popular day trip from Lisbon. CARCAVELOS, situated next to the imposing fortress St. Julian of Barra, with more than 1 Km of sand line and good transport access, Carcavelos beach attracts crowds of sun burning people in summer and legions of surfers all over the year. A pleasant stroll can take you from point to point along the sand, where you'll pass by lots of beach bars. Parking your car is easy in one of the many places available. There is a skate half pipe and a basket small field in the parking lot. The Carcavelos Market, moreover, is the place to shop for cheap clothes, bags, shows, jewellery, and so on. While the products sold there are already cheap, it would not hurt shoppers to haggle a little. For best buys, shoppers are advised to go to the market early. SPORTS AND ACTIVITIES: Golf - Several world class clubs in the Vicinity, Penha Longa, Estoril and Beloura. Horse Riding - Beautiful equestrian centre in the pine forest with several stables for lessons and rides to the beach.
