Karuna is a Tibetan word alluding to appreciating the immanence of life as a path to living a happy present life.
Karuna's architecture seeks to capture the old spirit of Byron. It is understated and designed to sit lightly on the earth where rainforest merges with ocean.
The gardens are designed to create a natural extension of the original rainforest on the west side of the house, right to its steps. The rocks and pebbles have been placed to mimic a rainforest riverbed.
Karuna is situated just a few steps from the cul-de-sac beach path to magnificent Tallow Beach.
Wander down with a dawn coffee or sunset libation to check out the famous surf breaks or scan for the plentiful whales and dolphins . Otherwise, stroll 5 minutes south along the beach - look for the wide opening in the beach dunes, walk inland a few metres, and discover a pristine Ti Tree lake of deep cultural importance to the local Bundjalung people.
At the very southern end of Tallow Beach, is Broken Head. From there, turn left to the car park and you¿ll see signs to a coastal path along the spectacular headlands and hidden beaches of beautiful Arakwal National Park. It's an easy walk with stunning views of the Byron coastline (bring footwear as some of the path stones can be sharp on bare soles).
For the less active, simply lie back on the lounge and contemplate the rainforest view where you'll occasionally see wallabies, possums, monitors, pythons, frogs and abundant bird life.
