The tiny village of Muker is the walking and cycling centre of the wild and rugged upper Swaledale, Wainwright’s favourite Dale and where the Pennine Way and Coast to Coast walks cross. Turn either direction out of Wayside Farm and you’ll be spoilt for choice, with walks direct from the doorstep and wall to wall views, this is such a pretty area with the traditionally farmed local hay meadows famous for their wild flowers. The village also has an array of amenities including a tea room, shop, art gallery, crafts shop, traditional Dales pub, serving food, and the famous Swalesdale Wollens shop. Cycling is also extremely popular here, being a stage to the 2014 Tour de France and the annual Tour de Yorkshire, as well as being en-route for the Swale Trail for mountain bikers. Cycle hire is available locally.
The bustling village of Reeth is a short drive away, with a variety of pubs, restaurants, tearooms, an ice cream parlour, gift shop and gallery. Visiting the market town of Richmond is a must with its beautiful Norman castle dominating the skyline. Take the riverside walk along to Easby, or meander around the picturesque market square with its wonderful array of quirky shops and galleries.
Drive over to Wensleydale and visit Aysgarth to see the waterfalls, or Hawes with its quirky shops and cafés, not forgetting to stop off at the famous Wensleydale Creamery. A little further down the road and you will reach the bustling market town of Leyburn, with a host of interesting shops, restaurants and cafés all set around the market square. Tuesday is market day giving you the chance to snap up some of the gorgeous local produce. Shop and pub 50 yards, restaurant 9 miles.
