The cottage is part of a Grade II listed former inn believed to date back to the 1600s. In its prime The Wheatsheaf Inn is reported to have been a very popular public house. In 1880 Florence Nightingale considered purchasing the property to convert into a coffee house and reading rooms, to offer an alternative to alcohol for the working man, as all-night drinking sessions were not uncommon at that time.
