Martinsicuro is the northernmost town on the Abruzzo coast, in the province of Teramo, and is part of the so-called “Seven Sisters”: Martinsicuro, Alba Adriatica, Tortoreto, Giulianova, Roseto degli Abruzzi, Pineto, and Silvi Marina.
It is a modern seaside resort on the Adriatic coast, located where the Val Vibrata meets the coastal plain. It is about 47 km from Teramo and 32 km from Ascoli Piceno.
In Roman times, the Via Salaria and Via Traiana crossed here, and the settlements of Truentum and Castrum Truentinum were located in this area. According to Pliny the Elder, Truentum was founded by the Viburni and later became an important Roman commercial port, eventually being fortified and renamed Castrum Truentinum. In the 4th century, it also became a bishopric, but declined after the fall of the Roman Empire.
The inhabitants moved to the hills for protection from barbarian invasions and Saracen pirates. In the 16th century, the Tronto River marked the border between the Papal States and the Kingdom of Naples, making the area strategically important again. In 1547, Emperor Charles V ordered the construction of a watchtower, also used for customs purposes.
Later, the spread of marshlands at the mouth of the Tronto River made the area unhealthy and sparsely populated. Only after the unification of Italy did the situation improve, thanks to land reclamation and the construction of the coastal railway. Tourism development eventually led Martinsicuro to become an independent municipality in 1963. Its name derives from the Tower of Charles V and, more specifically, from its builder, Captain Martin de Segura.
Among the main attractions is the Tower of Charles V, located in Via Colle di Marzio 1. Built in 1547 by order of the emperor, it is the northernmost watchtower of what was once the Kingdom of Naples. The multi-level structure features a sloped quadrangular base and was designed by the Spanish architect Pirro Aloisio Srivà. The façade includes decorative windows and an aedicule with columns, capitals, and a pediment bearing an inscription dedicated to Charles V. Heraldic symbols such as the double-headed eagle and the Golden Fleece are also visible.
